A few weeks ago I planned a girls sailing trip. I told the girls I’ll pay for it using my credit card and you just pay me cash when I see you since I’ll see you before we actually go. I first booked the trip using Groupon. Now I’ve booked two things thru this site and both things I’ve booked I’ve had trouble actually getting the trips and activities I’ve paid for. It’s like anything.. They’re glad to take your money, but once they have it they could care less. I blame the site, they sell a thousand of these deals, assure you that these small businesses can easily book these deals and nothing can be further from the truth. Anyways, I booked the sailing trip through Groupon and low and behold the small business could not handle booking a thousand sailing trips and I just kept getting the run around. I called Groupon and requested my money back which takes a few days since they cut you a check. I booked the sailing trip with another company. It was more expensive, but it was worth it to me to pay more and no for sure that we were going sailing on the day we all can go. Originally I quoted the girls $40 apiece. It turned out to be $45 per person, but I wasn’t going to go back on my word. I accepted the fact that I was going to eat $5 per person which equals to $20 on top of paying my $40. The day and time was set. We all make there on Pier 39 on time. I go to pick up the tickets and to pay and I look at my friends to ask who has their cash everyone was looking around for an ATM (Red Flag). The man in charge of collecting payments was getting impatient, so I just put it on my card and then we began looking for an ATM and food. The girl I’ve known the least amount of time paid me my money and since so much was going on my concerns weren’t on collecting money, but making sure we are on time to meet the sail boat. The last thing I wanted was to miss the boat because we’re looking for food, money, etc.
Once we actually get on the boat everything was great. The weather turned out to be perfect. This was a miracle in itself on our drive out to San Francisco all we could see was fog. Luckily, we had chosen an afternoon sailing time which gave the sun the perfect amount of time to come out, burn off the fog and shine. It was absolutely beautiful. The multi-colored sails underneath the golden gate bridge, dolphins and seal frolicking in the water, the shimmer of the water to the spectacular views of the city. The drinks were flowing. In case you haven’t gone sailing… it’s a great excuse to sit on your ass, drink and disguise being tipsy and just blame it on the sway of the boat. It was a trip we’ll always remember. We were sailing for 2 hours in the San Francisco Bay. As a kid I would get car sick, so you can only imagine what a sail boat would do. Any longer on that boat and I would’ve been looking for a barf bag. As we got off of the dock I told one of the girls “Hey by the way I never got your money.” And as the sentence fell out of my mouth we were sort of alone, but as she began to answer the other 2 girls gathered around. So I kind of put her on the spot. She said “oh… yeah I’m just going to buy you lunch and another drink.” I am not one to make a scene in public. It’s just not the way I handle things. Next thing I know we were on the hunt for a cab. We ended up at a bar. We ordered greasy bar food and beers. In true San Francisco fashion we found our way to a hippie hula hoop exercise class in the park in front of the church that Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio got married in. On the way home I confronted the last of the girls. She handed me $30 and said we spent some of it on the cab. Again I took it on the chin. I was too angry to say anything. When I get angry I like to take a day to think it through and ensure I don’t say anything stupid out of anger.
The following day I was downright angry. These were my friends. I planned this trip and clearly stated in the beginning the price, date and time. If someone can’t afford to go then don’t go. I would never do that to any of them, so why do they think its ok for them to do that to me? I never understand why people think its ok for them not to pay their debts. I think these things are water under the bridge and the next time I know that I need the cash up front or only do activities that we can pay for individually the day of. We all play the fool sometimes and Sunday was my turn. The moral of this little story is cash and friends don’t mix… use your credit card carefully and make them pay for their own shit.
